Dr. Sun is a leading international bridge design engineer who started Sun International in 2005. He was born in China in 1963 and received his PhD from UC San Diego. He is a registered engineer in the United States of America. He is a member of the Board of Trustees, University of California, San Diego and the president of the Chinese Alumni Association at UC San Diego.
In 2004, Dr. Sun received the Arthur M. Wellington Prize from the Journal of Bridge Engineering, ASCE. Three of Dr. Sun’s bridge projects have received the ENR Award (Engineering News – Record, highest honor in structural engineering) and two Chinese Zhan Tianyou Awards. He is also chief of the editorial board for the Precast Concrete Bridge Design Codes in China. In 2011, he was awarded the Overseas Chinese Entrepreneur Outstanding Contribution Award and his team was selected as the Key Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurial Team of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of The State Council in 2013. In 2014, Dr. Sun was named the Guangdong Province Special Support Entrepreneur, and in 2016, he was awarded the Chinese Overseas Contribution Award. In 2017, he received the True Triton Award from UC San Diego.

Dr. Seible is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a member of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He is the founder of the largest structural engineering testing facility in the world, the Charles Lee Powell Structural Research Laboratories at the University of California, San Diego, specializing in the application of structural engineering concepts in earthquake and blast resistant design. He also pioneered the use of new materials such as advanced composites in civil infrastructure protection. Dr. Seible has made outstanding contributions in structural engineering research including structural analysis, large-scale structural testing, earthquake resistant design, health monitoring, evaluation and retrofit design for bridges and buildings. He also contributes his extensive engineering experience in the blast resistant and seismic design of pipelines, airports, and harbor structures.
Dr. Seible has received over 40 awards for his contributions to engineering science and technology including the Presidential Young Investigator Award, the German Alexander von Humboldt Research Award, the K.B. Woods Award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Raymond C. Reese Research Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Concrete Institute Outstanding Concrete Project Award. In 1999, Dr. Seible was named by Engineering News as ‘One of the top 125 people who have most influenced and driven construction over the past 125 years’ and in 2017, Dr. Seible received China’s highest honor, the Chinese Friendship Award.
